AEO and GEO: getting cited when the answer replaces the click

Buyers now ask an assistant before they ask Google. If your pages are not structured for extraction, the assistant summarises a competitor instead — and you never see the visit that did not happen.

Chunk-ready structure, direct answers, question-shaped headings
GEO
Entity consistency, corroboration and citation-worthy source material

In short

What is the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO?

SEO optimises for ranked links. Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) structures content so an engine can extract a direct, quotable answer. Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) goes further: it makes your brand the entity a large language model associates with a topic, so you get cited inside generated answers. They share technical foundations but reward different things — AEO rewards structure and clarity, GEO rewards consistent, corroborated authority across the web.

  • AEO: Chunk-ready structure, direct answers, question-shaped headings
  • GEO: Entity consistency, corroboration and citation-worthy source material
  • Shared base: Clean HTML, schema coverage, crawlable server-rendered content
  • Measured by: Citation and mention tracking across AI assistants, not rankings alone

Signals

What losing AI visibility looks like

  • Competitors get cited, you do not

Ask an assistant your category question and three rivals appear by name.

  • Traffic down, rankings flat

Positions are unchanged but clicks fell, because AI Overviews answered above you.

  • Content is unextractable

Answers are buried in the fifth paragraph after a story about the founder's dog.

  • Nothing machine-readable

No schema, no clear entity definition, JavaScript-only rendering for key content.

How it runs

How the programme runs

  1. 01

    Baseline

We build a prompt set that mirrors how your buyers ask, then record who gets cited today. Without a baseline there is nothing to prove later.

  2. 02

    Fix the foundation

Server rendering, schema, crawl access and heading structure. No amount of good writing survives content a machine cannot read.

  3. 03

    Rewrite for extraction

Priority pages restructured answer-first, with facts, definitions and tables that are quotable in isolation.

  4. 04

    Track and iterate

Monthly re-runs of the prompt set, comparing citation share against competitors, and a ranked list of the next gaps to close.

Questions

Straight answers

The questions we get asked on almost every call about this work.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Classic search still drives most measurable traffic, and the technical foundations overlap heavily. AEO and GEO add a second surface you now have to compete on rather than replacing the first.

How do you measure whether it worked?

A fixed prompt set run monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, recording whether you are cited, mentioned or absent, and how that compares to named competitors.

How long before we see citations?

Structural fixes can change results within weeks because assistants re-crawl frequently. Entity authority — being corroborated across the wider web — is a multi-quarter effort.

Does our site need to be server-rendered?

Strongly recommended. Some crawlers execute JavaScript inconsistently or not at all, so content that only appears after hydration is effectively invisible to them.

Will more schema alone get us cited?

Schema makes you parseable, not authoritative. It is necessary and cheap, but citations follow clear answers plus corroborated expertise.
