Losing visibility to AI search
Your competitors get cited in AI answers and you do not
You can rank on page one and still be absent from the answer. Assistants are not choosing the best page; they are choosing the passage they can lift with confidence and attribute safely. Those are different competitions.
Short answer
Why does ChatGPT cite our competitors instead of us?
Because assistants cite what they can extract and verify, not what ranks. Pages that get cited answer a specific question in a self-contained passage near the top, use the same terminology the question uses, contain concrete specifics such as numbers, timeframes and named methods, carry structured data that confirms what the page is, and are corroborated by other sources mentioning the same entity. Content written as a long persuasive narrative with the answer buried in paragraph nine is invisible to extraction even when it is better. The fix is restructuring for extractability plus building entity presence off-site — typically eight to twelve weeks before citations move.
01
How this shows up
If four or more of these are true, this is your problem.
- Competitors named in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers for your category
- Your brand absent from AI responses about problems you solve
- Good rankings but declining click-through
- Content that reads well but never gets quoted
- No idea which prompts you appear in, or how often
- Nothing on the site written as a direct answer to a question
02
Why it happens
Answers buried in narrative
If the reader has to scroll to reach the point, a model has to guess where the point is. Extraction favours a clear, early, self-contained answer.
Vague, unfalsifiable claims
'Industry-leading results' cannot be cited. '70,000 records migrated in a four-month engagement' can. Specificity is what makes a passage quotable.
Weak entity presence
Assistants prefer sources corroborated elsewhere. If your organisation barely exists outside your own domain, confidence in citing you is low.
No structured data
Schema tells a machine what the page is and who published it. Its absence does not disqualify you, but it removes an easy signal.

04
How we fix it
- 01
Baseline your citation share
We test a defined prompt set across the major assistants and record who is cited for what, so improvement is measured rather than claimed.
- 02
Restructure for extraction
Question-shaped headings, a direct answer in the first passage, and self-contained sections that make sense when lifted out of the page.
- 03
Add verifiable specifics
Numbers, timeframes, named methods and honest constraints. Specific content is quotable content.
- 04
Build the entity
Consistent organisation identity, structured data, and presence on the third-party sources assistants already trust for your category.
- 05
Re-test and iterate
Monthly re-testing of the same prompt set, with content adjusted based on what actually changed rather than assumption.
05
What changes afterwards
- A measured baseline and monthly movement on citation share
- Pages structured so the answer is the first thing available
- Claims specific enough to be quoted and checked
- Presence in the sources assistants already treat as corroboration

Questions
People ask us this
Can you guarantee ChatGPT will cite us?
No, and nobody honestly can — assistants change models and retrieval behaviour without notice. What we can do is measure your current citation share, apply the structural and entity work that demonstrably improves it, and report the change monthly.
How long does it take to see results?
Eight to twelve weeks is typical before citation share moves meaningfully. Structural fixes land quickly; entity corroboration takes longer because it depends on third-party sources.
Is AEO different from SEO?
They overlap but optimise for different things. SEO competes for a ranked link; AEO competes to be the extracted, attributed passage inside an answer. The same page can win one and lose the other.
